Choice of storage shed

Before you order your storage shed kit you will need to make some decisions. These include:

  • What material do you want your shed kit to be me made from?
  • What size of storage shed do you need?
  • Can you construct or assemble your shed kit yourself?
  • How important is security?

There are three main choices of material for sheds - wood, metal or plastic. Each material has advantages and disadvantages which you need to consider before you order a shed kit.

Decide on the size of the storage shed you need by reviewing what you will store in it. Whilst a lot can be stored in a small shed you need to think about ease of access. How easy will it be to get out the things stored inside? Will it be quick? If you want your children to use the shed make sure that it will be easy for them. Check that the doors are big enough for the things you need to store. Finally check that the size will fit comfortably in your yard.

Talk to friends and neighbors about their sheds. If you can, go and see a few sheds being used. It will give you a better idea of what you need and the size you need than just looking in an empty shed in a showroom or just looking online.

If you are going to build  a storage shed you can do this from scratch or you can purchase a kit and assemble the pieces. Building a shed from your design or from plans you have can be rewarding if you have the necessary skills and time. If you don't have these skills then you can consider acquiring a shed with minimal assembly or hiring someone to build the shed for you.

What do you intend storing in your shed? If the items are valuable you will need to think about how secure your storage shed will be. You may need to check your insurance to see if items are covered in your shed against fire, damage, theft etc.

Other important things to consider

Building your storage shed

Most storage sheds will need some assembly when they arrive because they will arrive in a kit. Building a shed from a kit should be relatively easy because it will contain all the parts and instructions needed. Take care reading the enclosed shed building plans because it will make building your shed a lot simpler with perhaps less frustration.

When you build your storage shed get help from a friend. Some of the panels can be quite large and extra pair of hands comes in very useful. Preferably choose a friend who has some basic carpentry or building skills. Building a shed with at least two people should help to ensure a safer assembly. It may also help you avoid any assembly errors as both of you will be checking progress.

Generally shed kits are designed for quick, easy and safe assembly. But, before you start to build your storage shed make sure that you already have the necessary tools.

If you don't have a suitable friend you may find some companies will even build your shed for you. Or you can hire a local person.
